Test Before You Migrate: Determine Cloud Readiness in Minutes, Not Days

So, say your organization has 100 applications, and you’re facing a mandate from your company to figure out your cloud strategy. How do you determine which applications can (and should) be moved? With our latest release, Velostrata makes it possible to quickly test production workloads to validate performance, cost and suitability in the public cloud.

For many companies, simply figuring out what to migrate has been a challenge. Testing is a critical component of any migration strategy, but traditional tools are slow and complicated. Applications must be adapted to address any differences in infrastructure, and data must be fully replicated to the cloud for each application before any testing can take place. For production applications with a lot of data, this is time-consuming, risky and unscalable.

A/B Test the Cloud

Testing is a best practice in all disciplines. Marketers use A/B testing to determine which website layout works better to guide viewers to the actions they want them to take. When you are looking for a new service, you get competitive bids from different vendors. But because of the complexity mentioned earlier, determining which applications will adapt well to public cloud as well as which cloud will be the best fit have been substantial challenges. Velostrata changes this dynamic.

Velostrata Advantages

Velostrata is cloud workload mobility software that helps IT organizations move workloads from VMware on-premises to AWS and/or Azure in minutes. If you’d like a deeper dive into how it works, check out a whitepaper on the architecture. With our latest release, version 2.3, we have introduced some great new features that make it vastly easier to test how production applications will perform in the cloud, as well as get realistic cost information and other telemetry.

Fast: With a mouseclick in vCenter, you can quickly create a copy of any application running in cloud a matter of minutes. screen-shot-2016-11-07-at-1-39-58-pm

Velostrata’s unique workload streaming and caching is behind the scenes to make it work. (To avoid conflicts, you should make sure to migrate the clone to an isolated network.) No storage replication is needed, and applications can run at full performance in the cloud in minutes.

Simple: No agents are required, and Velostrata automatically adapts the workload for the cloud target – so you can try it in AWS, then try it in Azure and see which works best. There’s no downtime for your production applications, as you’re simply moving and testing a clone. Manage it all from our vCenter plugin, so there’s no need to learn a new interface. Here’s a short demo.

Low Risk: Velostrata provides you a way to quickly test application configurations in the cloud before you migrate. Test and re-test in minutes, as many times as you want – with no impact on the live production system. Velostrata can help you validate performance, understand costs, and identify optimal infrastructure configurations.

Once you’ve completed your testing, you can initiate full migration, where Velostrata will use the same process to quickly move your now-fully-tested production workload to the cloud. It’ll be up and running in minutes, regardless of image size, and then Velostrata will move the data in the background until your app is fully cloud native.

Next up: we’ll be talking about how Velostrata can handle mass migrations over small uplinks. Stay tuned!
