We all know that cloud migration projects are a large undertaking. And, we also know that the bigger the enterprise, the bigger the list of challenges they might encounter, which could include:
- cost overhead and labor intensity of migrating hundreds or thousands of workloads
- expertise required to migrate complex, multi-tiered applications
- difficulty of adhering to stringent application SLAs and minimizing cloud cutover downtime.
With today’s announcement that Velostrata now supports migrations into the Google Cloud Platform (GCP), these challenges (and many more) will become a thing of the past for any enterprise mass migrating their on-premises workloads into GCP. Customers can now overcome those challenges with ease by relying on Velostrata to accelerate, automate, simplify, and de-risk their mass migration projects.
This newly released integrated solution is proven at scale and takes an end-to-end approach to TCO reduction for customers. In addition to being offered free of charge to GCP customers, the solution also accelerates the speed of cloud migrations by more than 5x that of conventional approaches. This speed-to-cloud translates into direct customer savings by reducing both the CAPEX and OPEX associated with dual infrastructure costs when customers are forced to run parallel workloads on-premises and in the cloud until all application data is replicated into the cloud and application performance verified.
GCP customers will leverage this joint solution to get their on-premises applications started in GCP within minutes while remaining cold data migrates transparently in the background. This streaming-based architecture – designed and purpose-built for cloud migration – decouples the compute from storage, flipping the conventional migration paradigm upside down, where with conventional approaches enterprises were stuck waiting days or weeks for an application’s entire data set to migrate into the cloud before applications could begin running.
The architecture is also agentless which has traditionally saved customers up to 5 hours per server during their migrations by eliminating the need to deploy, configure and eventually uninstall software agents. These time savings add up quickly, providing enterprises with dramatic cost savings at scale. In addition to these labor savings, Velostrata also provides cloud instance right-sizing recommendations to help avoid the costs associated with cloud over-provisioning.
In fact, a recent report by Right Scale showed that 40% of cloud instances were over-provisioned and led to 11-16% in cloud overspend. Velostrata’s “right-sizing” feature aims to help customers select the optimal GCP instance based on both cost and performance parameters prior to migration with continued right-sizing optimizations once in GCP, all designed to keep cloud costs on (or under) budget.
Another key part of any cloud migration is testing, which is why Velostrata’s “test clones” give enterprises a way to test workloads directly in GCP with real data but without any impact on the production workloads running on-premises nor the real set of stateful data. This test-clone capability delivers thorough in-cloud application performance validation before the migration, something which is invaluable for organizational and stakeholder buy-in.
And, since not all migrations go as planned even with the best planning and testing, Velostrata also gives GCP customers a safety net to get back on-premises if needed, via a stateful rollback option. And, for enterprises already located in another public cloud, Velostrata also supports cross-cloud motion into GCP.
For customers, all of this functionality is driven via an integration of the GCP management console with Velostrata’s migration platform, managed via VMware vCenter plug-in. These integration points help eliminate IT learning curves by presenting VMware and GCP customers with a familiar interface, further accelerating and simplifying migration projects into GCP.
Through this partnership, Velostrata delivers exactly what enterprise customers need: end-to-end capabilities that drive our vision for an enterprise-grade migration experience that is robust, repeatable, friction-less, and cost-effective for customers. And we are excited to be an integral part of empowering GCP customers on their mass migration journeys.
